| Walking back toward Hatz, bear to your left up and into
Plaza Jobo, named for the wild hog
plum tree. Plaza Jobo is among the smallest plazas at El Pilar
(18 x 7 meters or 59 x 23 feet), and is better described as a patio.
As part of the BRASS/El Pilar Program, we excavated and consolidated
parts of four rooms on the northern and western end of Jobo. Two piers
that once supported a corbel roof flank the west rooms. One is consolidated
on your right as you proceed into the rooms. The facade of this building
appears to have had a stucco mosaic, parts of which were recovered
in the collapse of the building. |

Inside and to the right and north is a door opening
into a small room with an L-shaped bench and a sealed Maya door that
once opened into a room beyond. The rear wall was once the outer wall
of an Early Classic building. Parts of this room were modified at
a later time, as seen in the cruder construction style we believe
dates to the Late Classic. These construction details help us understand
the evolution of the use of H'mena at El Pilar. |
| Ahead and to the west you can enter a partially excavated room below
the main pyramid overhead. This inner room has a portion of a very
large U-shaped bench. There is a small door leading into a corbel
passage to the north. Both rooms had high vaulted ceilings and it
looks as if the pyramid above was accessed from the roof of this room.
Above, exposed in the side wall of the excavation, is evidence of
the plaster roof and some of the pyramid wall. |
| Note that the doorjamb of this inner room has a cord-holder
that once was used to keep a curtain closed. Such openings may be
seen in other Maya doorjambs. Before you leave Jobo reexamine the
door into the north room, where you can see another style of cord-holder.
A similar feature may be seen on one of the doors of the palace-like
structure of Tzunu'un, on the Lakin
Trail. As you travel to other Maya monuments, look for other cord-holders
and observe the different styles in which they were made. |
