The path winds eastward between two pyramids to arrive at a wonderful rest stop on the morning terrace. As you look out you see a sheer stone-faced drop off overlooking an ancient aguada (Spanish for reservoir) that once collected vital drinking water for the ancient inhabitants of El Pilar. Here you can enjoy a short rest at one of our comfortable bench vistas. As you continue on the trail to the north you will descend a short staircase that returns to Plaza Copal via the ball court. The ancient Maya would not have been able to use this route--originally there was no access here. At the base of our park stairs, you pass a path to your right that can take you quickly back to the parking area. In the past, this ramp would have led down to the aguada for water.
