At the northwest corner of the Plaza Copal you will
find a sign that reads, "Bryan & Murphy Causeway." Take
a look down the 16 meter (52 foot) descent on a ramp-landing system
to the stretch of an ancient causeway (sacbe or white road
in Mayan). This causeway leads to the west to connect with Pilar
Poniente
in Guatemala and is more than 30 meters (98 feet) wide and 500 meters
(1641 feet) in length. As with the plazas at the monumental core,
it was once covered with smooth white plaster and bordered by stone
walls on either side. |
