Bryan and Murphy Causeway
At the northwest corner of the Plaza Copal you will find a sign that reads, "Bryan & Murphy Causeway." Take a look down the 16 meter (52 foot) descent on a ramp-landing system to the stretch of an ancient causeway (sacbe or white road in Mayan). This causeway leads to the west to connect with Pilar Poniente in Guatemala and is more than 30 meters (98 feet) wide and 500 meters (1641 feet) in length. As with the plazas at the monumental core, it was once covered with smooth white plaster and bordered by stone walls on either side.
1986 Photo of Causeway
This photo was taken from an airplane in 1986 soon after the forest was burned back. You can see the ghostly image of the causeway stretching toward Pilar Poniente.
