At the bottom of the hill is a short dead-end trail to the left, that leads to a small spring. Animal tracking studies around this spring verify the local abundance of wildlife. This water source is a Mecca for a variety of animal life.

"This water hole you see is a natural spring that flows continuously from within the earth's surface providing clean water for both people and wild animals. El Pilar is a unique site that has water sources located throughout the area. There are at least seven springs in this Community Creek Trail alone. In fact, it may be that the name of the area came about due to the many water receptacles known as pilas.

Natural Spring

These pilas are now the principal source of drinking water for the variety of wild animals that are now returning to this forestland such as the gibnut, armadillo and deer. Take a look at the area around the spring -- do you see any animal tracks?" -- EP Community Creek Trail Guide
