The development of this trail has included formal crossings on the creek, some resting benches, and interpretive stops to better explain the nature of the Maya forest. There are small springs and seeps here and there surrounded by lush growth, encouraged by the moisture. Ultimately, the trail crosses the creek a last time and heads up away from the water and into the sun. Notice the increase in temperature and think of the plants and animals as well as the monuments protected by the shade.
Old Growth Tree "Here you can appreciate a mature forest, which was not altered severely. This healthy forest symbolizes a gateway of hope for the type of habitat, which will result from the designation of this area as El Pilar Archaeological Reserve. Old Growth Tree

During the trail walk, while appreciating the magnificent monuments of the ancient Maya, one cannot help but compare the different changes in the landscape. You saw the growth of forests among the Maya temples of Plaza Duende, Plaza Copal and Plaza Faisan. These forests stand majestically after years of alterations and natural regeneration. Similar alterations occurred in the area you are standing, and this time not by the ancient Maya, but by their descendants, who originally came from various communities. With brute strength and strong hearts the tough and hard working settlers started conquering the land, but like the ancient Maya the forest has once again been left to recover. Thanks to the bold steps that were taken by many public and community initiatives, the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve is returning to the way it once was.

Can you envision how this land will look in the future? Like a new dawn for nature with thick undercover, rich humus on the forest floor and the chirping of birds zooming across the air in the beauty of a resplendent plethora of giants. And, and ant moving carelessly across the path." -- EP Community Creek Trail Guide

The large hill to your right is the planned site for El Pilar Visitor's Center. Above the prospective site for the center, on top of this hill, is a large Maya house-plaza group, similar to Tzunu'un. This site commands a magnificent view of the countryside in all directions.
