From the LDF Chert Site, you can backtrack to the core site or continue west in a loop to scale the public entrance to Plaza Copal. The trail heads into a grove of corozo or cohune palms, or a corozal, and around ancient houses, to the causeway up to the heart of Nohol Pilar. Follow the well-cleared path into the jungle and into this special nature space at El Pilar. In the midday light, this place feels like a natural cathedral. The spreading fronds of the giant corozo palms create a sense of Gothic arches and the moving light dapples the forest floor like stained glass.
Corozal Grove
If you are here on a day with wind, you will hear the remarkable sound of the breeze in the corozo leaves. One definition of Mopán, the name of the river at Bullet Tree Falls, in the local Mayan language is the sound of wind through the corozo fronds. Take in the sights and sounds of this exceptional trail. You can see evidence of the originally illegal logging road. Soon after leaving the chert site, on your right there is an old chain sawed trunk. This was accomplished when there was no protection at El Pilar. Your presence here today helps protect this area.
