TEN YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT AT EL PILAR:
1992-2002

COMMUNITY AND NATURE AT EL PILAR:
A PHILOSOPHY OF RESILIENCE FOR THE MAYA FOREST

Appendix VI: History of Community Participation

The development of El Pilar and the cross-border aspect is unique in the Maya forest and in Central America. El Pilar is now two contiguous areas protecting one cultural resource in two countries. This evolution has been an experience worth sharing and gives the overview of the events that have built the El Pilar Program. Key activites and steps are included. We undoubtedly leave some details out, but the compilation is comprehensive.

The sequence has focused on community and management activities as they relate to the research process at El Pilar. The outline of the major events over the past ten years is presented in the following table. Activities are shown by year demonstrate the parallel process and links in the development process.
